Hypnotherapy 101 – What is it? How does it work?

At the Institute of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy, we usually focus on rather deep and advanced hypnotherapy topics, but it is important that our audience first understand about the basics regarding what is hypnotherapy and how it works.  This short blog article will help any reader who is new to hypnosis to get a deeper understanding about why we do what we do and why it is so effective in helping to improve people’s lives.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy uses the altered state of mind, known as hypnosis, to gain access to the subconscious mind to effect change on deeper levels beyond what the conscious mind can.  For instance, many people struggle to change attitudes, emotions, or behaviors just through their power of will, only to find that their stronger subconscious emotional mind tends to win time and time again.  We all want our subconscious minds to respond to our most positive intentions, yet despite our best efforts another part of our mind tends to take over with old patterns that no longer serve us.  Through hypnotherapy, we can reprogram the subconscious mind to truly be an ally in our health and well-being.

Is hypnotherapy only programming?

Hypnotherapy is so much more than just inducing the hypnotic state and telling the subconscious to act or feel differently. A well-trained hypnotherapist, with state-licensed diplomas, and over 500 hours of training, can work wonders through powerful transformational techniques that talk with the subconscious mind and not only at it. Simple hypnotic programming is not always enough to make truly lasting change; this is where the additional training and techniques come into play. These techniques can include, but are not limited to Parts Therapy, NLP, Core Transformation, Regression Therapy, Breathwork, Past-Life Regression Therapy and Life-Between-Life Regression Therapy.

Is this a licensed profession and what do I need to get started?

Schools legally should be licensed to offer career training and the Institute of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy has been licensed by the Department of Education to offer legitimate career diplomas in this field since 2007.  However, the profession itself is not licensed because it has been determined time and time again that hypnotherapy as a profession is generally safe and does not require the regulations and restrictions of government oversight. After all, you are not ‘diagnosing,’ and most certainly not ‘prescribing.’ The profession is self-regulated, and practitioners are certified, not licensed.  Remember, no prior degrees are required to attend our school and we are always happy to offer people new careers, regardless of their background, which brings true meaning and fulfillment to life.

There is always more to learn, and we are here to help.  Check us out at www.InstituteofHypnotherapy.com or give us a call at 800-551-9247.
