Did Jesus use hypnosis? Perhaps not formally, yet do some of the reported miracles contain aspects of the power of suggestion and even the altered state? Is it possible that one of the greatest figures in religious literature knew about how to influence the subconscious mind and create positive change? We all know about the life and teachings of Jesus, yet can we understand why he was so influential in changing world thought? Let’s define our terms:
Jesus: Without being religious, we can say with relative certainty that a man lived about 2,000 years ago who changed the face of the world forever. Aside from matters of faith, we have reports of teachings and healings that are rather noteworthy to say the least. What can we as hypnotherapists learn from the supposed healings that occurred as they are reported in the New Testament?
Hypnosis: There is an altered state where people are more responsive to suggestions and where a powerful religious figure could influence the subconscious mind more easily. Is the reputation of the healer important? Does faith and/or belief in him (or her) increase the efficacy of the healing response? Hypnosis is proven to tap into the power of the mind for positive change. How can spiritual and religious overtones effect this in positive ways, such as that which we find in faith healing.
Transpersonal Hypnotherapy: Within the field of hypnosis training and certification, we have a branch that is Transpersonal, which is to say that we look at aspects of the practice that go beyond what we see with our physical eyes. We acknowledge a spiritual aspect to who we are and use various modalities to facilitate positive change from that vantage point. Looking at the lives of the world’s great saints and sages has given us tremendous insight into the potentials of the mind when it comes to using hypnosis with spiritual overtones.
