Does classical hypnosis training offer the opportunity to connect with spiritual realms of being? Is it wise to blend down-to-earth scientific hypnotism training with metaphysics? If we keep discussions about “Higher Self” out of the hypnotherapy dialogue, then do we miss something vital and important? If we answer that it is best to acknowledge a reality beyond the physical, then at what point in an education in hypnotherapy should we discuss transpersonal ideas? Join us on Monday the 16th at 7:00pm EST for a live online webinar to discuss scientific hypnotherapy and the place for “Higher Self” in this life-transforming field of study.
What is scientific hypnosis training?
The idea of scientific hypnosis came about when certain medical professionals decided not to write off the power of the mind in the healing arts. This came about primarily with Dr. James Braid who is considered the “father of modern hypnosis.” Dr Braid coined the term ‘hypnosis’ to separate it from its origins with Mesmerism, and he postulated that simple direct suggestion while in the altered state could provide the same results as those who believed in unseen forces, such as Animal Magnetism or Mesmeric Fluid. By demystifying the altered state, it became much more mainstream, yet at the cost of removing all metaphysical components that many people find so very rewarding.
How can we bring Metaphysics, Higher-Self, and the Transpersonal back in?
At the Institute of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy, we teach 300 hours of classical hypnotherapy with minimal emphasis on anything that is considered spiritual. We honor everyone’s beliefs, yet hold a space for those who consider themselves to be spiritual and those who do not. Basic hypnotherapy does not require any spiritual or religious beliefs, and our first 300 hours honors that. In the next 100 hours, as we explore healing and medical hypnotherapy, we do get into the realms of metaphysics, while still holding to the scientific and research-based aspects of hypnosis as well. Therefore, those interested in the science of it can stay “down-to-earth,” and those who want to start to explore the metaphysics of it can explore that as well.
During our last 100 hours of training, we bring in a strong spiritual component to the work in a program called Certified Transpersonal Hypnotherapist. Here, we always acknowledge the model of a Superconscious Mind in our work, and the idea of a “Higher-Self” is simply taken as a basic presupposition for the work.
This format for a hypnosis training allows people who want basic certification to get a State-Licensed education without having to acknowledge any “spiritual” themes, yet it holds space for the many people who do want that in their training. By the end of the overall training, many students are fascinated by the idea of Transpersonal Hypnotherapy, and find that the extra credential helps many people regardless of one’s own current belief systems.
