The power of the mind has long been acknowledged as an important adjunct to traditional medical care. In the fields of functional medicine, integrative medicine and/or complementary medicine, the use of hypnotherapy offers practitioners a significant movement into what it means to be truly “holistic.” Many Certified Clinical Hypnotherapists are learning to use their skill-sets to work in association with doctors, dentists, and other health care providers to offer much more value to the patient. Bringing hypnotherapy into a person’s overall plan for health and well-being benefits everyone involved, and is quite fulfilling for someone who takes the time to learn medical hypnotherapy.
How does Hypnotherapy work within Integrative Care?
By definition, an integrative medical model must include body, mind, and spirit or it is not complete. Hypnotherapy training offers you the ability to use the mind to heal the body, use the mind to heal the heart/mind itself, and offers the ability to welcome in spiritual themes that might not be covered even in the more open-minded medical practices. In integrative practice, hypnotherapists can work out of their own office with a referral system with physicians or they can even work directly out of medical settings. There is no end to the applications of the mind when doctor, patient, and hypnotherapist come together to treat the person as a whole.
Is Hypnotherapy a Stand-Alone form of Healthcare?
No. Hypnotherapy can be a powerful adjunct to traditional or holistic medical care, yet it should never stand alone when working with medical conditions. Hypnosis is not a panacea, so those who use it do need to understand its limitations. The mind is extremely powerful, and countless studies now show the efficacy of hypnosis in clinical applications, yet our clients are always encouraged to approach their health from many different angles, and never to neglect working with their primary care physician.
What is Clinical and/or Medical Hypnotherapy Training?
A solid and comprehensive state-licensed hypnotherapy training may focus on the following, yet is not limited to:
- Healing and Pain Management
- Treatment for specific medical conditions for symptom relief or elimination of root causes
- Hypnosis in Dentistry
- Hypnosis in Childbirth
- Hypnosis for Behavior Modification (Smoking Cessation and Weight Reduction primarily).
A Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist is trained to work within the law and with high ethical standards. He or she learns how to work on medical conditions, and within a referral system that keeps the client safe and under proper medical care. Here the practitioner of hypnosis enhances his/her own private practice, and makes the work just that much more rewarding.
