Can hypnosis and hypnotherapy be learned online? At the Institute of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy, we have worked extremely hard to bring our students the best of all educational systems. Now, virtually every college and university around the world uses some form of modern technology to deliver their education. Explore this week’s article to learn more about the benefits and the drawbacks of in-house learning, synchronous and asynchronous distance learning, and how to thrive as a student of hypnotism.
In-House Learning
When our Institute opened in 2007 to teach hypnosis and hypnotherapy, we were a fully in-house training where students had to be in the classroom for every hour of class. This involved sitting through many lectures and discussions about theory that could have easily been learned through a computer while students sat in the comfort of their own home. In 2009, we began implementing distance learning protocols for only the theoretical portions of the training, and the student feedback was very positive. In time, more and more classes were taught online, and student comprehension was actually better than the original classroom learning. We surprisingly found that we had developed a huge online library where students could go back and watch classes over and over again. With in-house training, information was said only once in the hopes that the student would absorb the information on the first pass. Now with distance learning, our students have lifetime access to our training videos and can watch them as much as needed.
We did find the immense value of hands-on practical hours for a number of reasons:
- 1. Group bonding
- 2. Lifelong friendships
- 3. Live interaction with teachers
- 4. Direct personal experiences with facilitating hypnosis
- 5. Personal hypnotherapy sessions during in-house hypnosis training.
At IIH, we still highly value in-house learning and provide over 150 hours of live training with certified teachers and supervisors, where the group ratio tends to be one teacher for every five students.
Asynchronous Learning
This style of learning implies that students can take the training at their own pace and in a way that meets their own schedule. With our Online Interactive Tutorials, students log on to our website and watch training videos designed for adult education. This consists of over 300 hours of hypnosis training and has been licensed by the US Department of Education as part of our overall hybrid style of learning.
Synchronous Learning
Here students learn online directly with a live teacher. This allows you to ask questions in between the in-house practical hours. Classes can be watched live or can be viewed as recordings later if the live schedule does not match one’s daily schedule. During these classes a certified IIH instructor reviews theory, core competencies and prepares students for in-house practical hours.
As a state-licensed postsecondary vocational institute, IIH is proud to offer a tried and true hybrid learning system that has created many exceptionally successful hypnotherapists. Learn more at: https://www.instituteofhypnotherapy.com/schedules/
