Hypnotherapy has officially been recognized on a federal level as an occupation since the early 1970’s. The United States Department of Labor’s Dictionary of OccupationTitles first acknowledged the profession, followed by the Occupational Information Network (O*Net), followed by United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics Instructional Program Data which lists Hypnotherapist as “513603: Hypnotherapy/Hypnotherapist.” We invite you to read more to learn about the various standards for hypnotherapy education.
Because Hypnotherapy is a federally acknowledged occupation, it follows that most states will require any school offering career certifications/diplomas in this field to be licensed by the Department of Education. The Institute of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy (formerly The Florida Institute of Hypnotherapy) was the first school to be licensed to offer such diplomas in the State of Florida. We currently function as one of the few hypnotherapy schools in the Country that maintains this standard of licensure. This license not only comes with a steep financial cost, it also requires the school to have very clear policies, procedures, catalog, enrollment agreement and many of the other same components as any other postsecondary vocational institute, college or university. We highly recommend that any student interested in hypnotherapy certification look first and foremost for a true licensed postsecondary vocational institute.
State-licensed hypnotherapy training is the first step in ensuring a quality education. From there, we encourage students to consider the number of hours of training to learn hypnosis and hypnotherapy. At IIH we offer over 500 hours of comprehensive hypnotism training with a combination of distance learning and in-house supervised practical hours. It is our belief that hypnosis certification should be a minimum of 300 hours from a state-licensed school and that the system of learning is up-to-date, with the most modern technologies, and designed to deliver a complete, comprehensive education to a busy working adult.
