Getting Certified to Practice Hypnotherapy
There are many types of hypnosis education and with the popularity of the internet, finding a quality training can be difficult. Students who do not do their research can end up with certifications given by unlicensed schools, and with far less training than is recommended to create a truly successful hypnotherapist. We therefore recommend that training in any profession comes from a state-licensed school. Do I need to be a Certified Hypnotherapist?
Hypnotherapy is a self-regulated profession, yet career education is highly regulated by the Department of Education, therefore we again encourage that you only attend a true, state-licensed postsecondary vocational institute that is approved to offer legitimate diplomas in hypnotherapy. In the United States, you do not have to be certified to practice hypnosis on the Federal level. On a State level, you will want to consider the laws that govern the practice of hypnosis. In all 50 States, you can legally practice hypnosis, yet most states have laws that ensure that hypnosis for medical, mental health and dental procedures is only practiced by those with qualifications in their respective fields or through the referral of such practitioners. Most States do not require that you are licensed, certified or even regulated, yet as a self-regulating profession, we highly recommend that you personally maintain very high standards in how you become a hypnotherapist. Being certified by a national or international hypnotherapy association helps to ensure that you are supporting organizations that are working to raise hypnotherapy education to an ever-higher standard. We founded the International Association of Interpersonal Hypnotherapists for many reasons even though there are many other fine organizations out there. What about local laws for Cities and Counties?
It is important that all practicing hypnotherapists contact their local City and County offices to inquire about getting a Business Tax Receipt (formerly known in most location as an Occupational License). Many local offices misinterpret the State laws that govern the practice of hypnosis and hypnotherapy. The IAIH has been instrumental in working with these offices to ensure the free and open practice of hypnotherapy.
