At the Institute of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy we offer a comprehensive 500+ hour State-Licensed training in Hypnotherapy, Clinical Hypnotherapy and Transpersonal Hypnotherapy, along with multiple CEU courses in Self-Hypnosis and Meditation, Intuitive and Psychic Development, and Interpersonal Hypnotherapy itself.

We are therefore often asked is there is a difference between hypnosis and meditation, to which we would certainly say that yes, there is.  On the most basic levels we can use the words interchangeably, yet in the deeper sense there is a very big difference, which is worth understanding if you are exploring these themes professionally.

The Difference Between Hypnosis and Meditation

Hypnosis can be defined as a natural, yet altered, state of mind marked by a high degree of responsiveness and communication with the subconscious mind.  The important part of this definition is the idea of responsiveness to suggestion.

There are many altered states which can be natural, such as guided imagery and relaxation techniques, and there are others that can be induced through substances.  A natural, yet altered state of mind, without responsiveness to suggestion is not considered hypnosis, in the true sense.

Hypnotherapy is to use powerful transformational modalities while a person is in this state.  Hypnotherapy therefore can become a career where we help people by using hypnosis along with other techniques to create positive change in people’s lives.

Meditation can be defined as the simple act of putting one’s attention upon something – whether that something is outside or inside of our self.  For instance, we can meditate on a candle flame, a sunset or a mantra that we sing out loud.  We can also meditate on inner realities, such as mental images, internal mantras or on pure consciousness itself.  The teachings that we find in the meditation traditions are many thousands of years old, while hypnosis and hypnotherapy teachings are only about a couple of hundred years old.  Meditation aligns us with ancient wisdom traditions designed to enlighten us as to who we really are.  Hypnosis teachings are therefore an amazing gateway to the deeper meditation teachings, while Hypnotherapy allows us to use altered states in strategic ways to bring about change on deep subconscious levels.
