Hypnotherapy and Medical Conditions: Understanding Hypnosis Law

At the Institute of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy, we are frequently asked about Medical Hypnosis Training and if it is legal to practice hypnotherapy on medical conditions. People are often confused about the law and about if they can get hypnotherapy training or not for working on medical conditions. With our origins in the State of Florida, we base all of our school policies on Florida Hypnosis Law because that law is actually solid enough to protect our students and graduates in all 50 states. If we follow the requirements of these hypnosis statutes in all 50 states then we can rest assured that we are practicing properly, yet we need to understand the laws in any state that we practice in and in the end we are all responsible for proper practice management and our own understandings of the laws that govern us. Read more here about important details on hypnosis law and working on medical conditions.

Hypnosis Law

At the IAIH, we monitor hypnosis law in relationship to our hypnotherapy training courses and we report them here at https://www.interpersonalhypnotherapy.com/us-state-hypnosis-laws. Links are given for each state, in case the law changes before we get to post it on our website. We encourage you to learn more about the law before reading the specific statutes because it is very easy to misinterpret what you read. For a detailed discussion about hypnosis law and medical conditions, check out the videos and PDF documents at: https://www.interpersonalhypnotherapy.com/legal-efforts.

Getting Referrals when Working on Medical Conditions

The basics of hypnosis law says that you can work on hypnosis for anything, yet when the condition is medical, dental, or mental health based, you need to get a prescription, referral, supervision, or direction from the appropriate licensed practitioner of the healing arts. Therefore if you work on a dental condition, you will need a referral from a dentist. If you work on a medical condition, then you need a referral from a physician, and if you work on a mental health condition, then you need a referral from a licensed mental health care provider. Following these guidelines for all 50 states should keep hypnotherapists and their clients safe and operating within the law.

Are Other Degrees Required for Undergoing Hypnosis Training?

You do not need any specialized or formal degrees to go through hypnotherapy training. Anyone can become a hypnotherapist, however, to work on medical conditions you simply need to get a referral from the appropriate licensed practitioner. This is where we find the distinction between therapeutic and non-therapeutic hypnosis. Anyone can use hypnosis for non-therapeutic issues, such as raising self-esteem, finding inner peace, sleeping better at night, stopping unwanted behaviors, and hundreds of other such topics. Therapeutic hypnosis involves any diagnosed medical, dental, or mental health condition. In those cases, our graduates are trained to work with licensed professionals to get referrals to keep operating within the parameters of the law and to keep our clients safe.
We are passionate about our profession and about training people to become hypnotherapists, therefore we are dedicated to understanding the laws which govern our work and to letting others know the truth about practicing responsibly, ethically, and legally.
