Did you know that Hypnotherapy is a federally acknowledged occupation? Did you know that it is illegal to offer career training in a profession that is not licensed by the respective State Department of Education? Do you know about the laws in your State that govern our profession? Many hypnotherapy schools and many hypnotherapists are operating under the radar with minimal training, minimal to no regulation, and certifications that are not backed by the Department of Education. It’s easy to get training in hypnosis and to learn hypnotherapy to some degree, yet do you really know all that you need to know to help to protect the legitimacy of the profession? Read more here and be part of the higher standards of hypnosis education…
Hypnotherapy as an Occupation
You can learn hypnosis virtually anywhere now. It is perfectly legal for you to read a book on hypnosis and to hypnotize others. You can learn through weekend workshops or even in trainings that are only about 50 to 100 hours, yet these trainings do not necessarily make you a true professional. The United States Department of Labor has defined Hypnotherapy/Hypnotherapist as a profession, therefore any school or individual that offers you credentials in this field must be licensed by their respective State’s Department of Education. We highly encourage that you only support State-Licensed schools if you are considering becoming a hypnotherapist for professional purposes. Why is it illegal to train Hypnotherapists without being licensed to do so?
The United States Department of Education exists to protect the consumer. For instance, imagine going through a school to become a nurse or a doctor only to find out that you could not use your credentials in a professional manner because the school that offered them was not licensed to do so. Unfortunately, the Department of Education cannot regulate all hypnosis trainings that come up on the internet or that even advertise in your local holistic health magazine. If you are looking into a hypnotherapy training that tells you that you can have a career in this profession, then be absolutely sure that they are licensed to do so. http://www.fldoe.org/policy/cie
State-Hypnosis Laws
We frequently get requests from people going through unlicensed hypnotherapy trainings about the hypnosis laws in their States. The reason for this is that these “schools” are usually only concerned about offering you some training and taking your money. They are not necessarily interested in the law, the regulations that govern our profession, ethics, proper semantics in advertising, and proper scope of practice assessment trainings. Any good school should be training you in the laws of your respective State for becoming a hypnotherapist and should also be licensed themselves to do so. Since 2007, the Institute of Interpersonal Hypnotherapy has been working to raise the standards of hypnosis training, and to educate the public about the highest standards of education in our field. We cannot recommend enough that if you are looking for a career in hypnotherapy that you look for schools that offer:
- True state-licensed diplomas
- Certifications through legitimate governing, credentialing and regulatory bodies
- 500+ hours of hypnotherapy training
- CEUs (Continuing Education Hours)
- Law and legislative work that protects our profession
- Legitimate financing options when financial assistance is made available
- A clear catalog that is reviewed by the Department of Education
- A state-backed Student Protection Fund to protect your investment in your education
- A clear refund and withdrawal policy reviewed by the Department of Education
- State-Reviewed financial statements that ensure the financial integrity of the school
- Qualified, credentialed faculty and staff who have passed criminal background checks
This list is only a sample of what is required to be a true college, university or postsecondary vocational institute. If you’ve read this far, then we cannot encourage you enough to only choose state-licensed schools and to not get hypnotherapy training through organizations that hold our profession back from getting the respect that it deserves.
Our next State-Licensed Hypnotherapy training begins June 25th, 2019. Learn more by calling 800-551-9247 or visit us online at www.InstituteofHypnotherapy.com.
